POPP Internet Phone Service

POTS Line Replacement Using Your Existing Internet Connection

Traditional copper phone lines (POTS lines) continue to become more expensive and increasingly difficult to maintain. POPP Internet Phone Service provides a modern replacement that allows existing phone systems and analog devices to continue operating over your internet connection while reducing monthly costs.

Whether you need service for a fax machine, phone system, ATM, postage meter, entry system, monitoring equipment, or other analog device, POPP Internet Phone Service delivers reliable dial tone using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology.

Common Uses for POPP Internet Phone Service

Internet Phone Service lines can support a wide variety of business equipment, including:

  • Legacy phone systems
  • Fax machines
  • Postage meters
  • ATM machines
  • Door entry systems
  • Building access systems
  • HVAC monitoring equipment
  • Security systems
  • Industrial monitoring devices
  • Specialty analog equipment

If your device currently uses a standard POTS telephone line, there is a good chance it can be migrated to POPP Internet Phone Service.

Benefits of POPP Internet Phone Service

Lower Monthly Costs

Traditional telephone carriers continue to increase the cost of maintaining copper infrastructure. Internet Phone Service lines typically cost less than traditional landlines while providing the same dial tone functionality.

Keep Existing Equipment

Many businesses still rely on analog devices that are expensive or impractical to replace. POPP Internet Phone Service allows these devices to remain operational while transitioning away from legacy copper service.

Unlimited Local Calling

Unlimited local calling and complimentary domestic long distance calling are included.

Remote Management Options

When paired with POPP’s optional VoIP Management Device (VMD), voice traffic can be prioritized for optimal call quality, while providing enhanced monitoring and remote troubleshooting capabilities.

Flexible Agreement Options

Choose from various service plans to fit your organization’s budget and long-term goals.

Internet Bandwidth Requirements

POPP Internet Phone Service requires a reliable, business-grade internet connection.

POPP recommends a minimum bandwidth of:

  • 1.5 Mbps download
  • 1.5 Mbps upload

Active calls consume very little bandwidth – approximately 87 Kbps of bandwidth per call.

Because the lines rely on your internet service, they will not function during an internet outage unless a backup internet connection with automatic failover is in place.

Power Outage Considerations

Unlike POPP’s Wireless Phone Service, our Internet Phone Service does not include built-in battery backup.

During a power outage, service will only continue if:

  • The VoIP Gateway/ATA remains powered
  • Internet equipment remains powered
  • Any connected phone system or device remains powered

Businesses can achieve this by utilizing:

  • Building generator systems
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems
  • Battery backup systems

Optional POPP VoIP Management Device (VMD)

The optional POPP VoIP Management Device provides several benefits:

1. Voice Quality Optimization

With the VMD, voice traffic is configured with higher priority than data traffic, helping maintain clear and reliable conversations even during periods of heavy internet usage. This setting is called Quality of Service (QoS).

POPP commonly deploys SonicWALL devices as the VoIP Management Device.

2. Remote Monitoring and Support

POPP can remotely monitor and troubleshoot service issues, often resolving problems without requiring an on-site technician visit.

3. Enable Automatic Internet Failover to a Backup Internet Connection

For businesses with dual internet connections, the VMD can automatically route voice traffic to a backup connection if the primary internet service fails.

Fire Alarms, Elevator Phones, and Security Systems

POPP Internet Phone Service may be suitable for certain alarm and emergency communication applications when appropriate backup power and internet redundancy systems are present.

However, applicable codes and operational requirements must be considered.

For many fire alarm panels, elevator phones, and similar safety-related applications, POPP Wireless Phone Service offers a better solution because it includes cellular connectivity and battery backup designed specifically for these environments.

If you are unsure which service is appropriate, POPP can help evaluate your requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep my existing phone number?

In most cases, yes. Existing telephone numbers can typically be ported to POPP service.

Will Internet Phone Service work if my internet goes down?

No. Because the service uses your internet connection, calls cannot be completed during an internet outage. If service must continue during an internet outage, we recommend POPP Wireless Phone Service instead.

Will Internet Phone Service work during a power outage?

Only if your internet equipment, VoIP gateway, and connected devices are powered by customer-provided battery backup or generator systems.

Can I use Internet Phone Service for fax machines?

Yes. We commonly utilize Internet Phone Service to support faxing on traditional office fax machines.

Is Internet Phone Service suitable for elevator phones and fire alarms?

Potentially, but only when appropriate power backup and code requirements are met. For life-safety applications, POPP recommends our Wireless Phone Service as the preferred solution.
